Why foster a rescue dog?

January 19, 2017

Here are some of the reasons we at GypsySoul have come up with for why fostering a rescue dog is one of the most rewarding experiences.

1. You get to help a dog learn to be a dog again...

You have no idea how many dogs come to our rescue that just don't know how to "dog". They don't know how to play, how to accept love, or how to just do dog things. Some of them have spent their whole lives in shelters and cages. Fostering these dogs allows an opportunity for them to flourish, to learn how to live in a home, and to learn how to be loved. Not only is this enriching for these dogs but it will be rewarding for you to see your foster dog come out of its shell and let its personality shine!!

2. You are saving a life...

Fostering a dog from GypsySoul allows us more space to pull more dogs from high kill shelters across the country. Not only are you ensuring that your foster dog has a warm place to sleep but you're ensuring that another dog can be saved from being put to sleep. Shelters rely on rescues to pull these dogs before their time is up and nothing breaks our hearts more than having to turn a dog away. However, if we don't have the space, there is nothing we can do. The more foster homes we have, the more dogs we can save.

3. It is a short term alternative to getting a new pet...

Don't have the time or money to get a new pet but missing something in your life? By fostering, you are taking in a dog that will have all its vetting paid for and, as resources allow, food will be provided as well. It's not a lifetime commitment to a pet and the commitments can range from just a few days to a few months.

4. A dog who has been fostered is easy to adopt out...

When a dog has had experience living in a home, has had some training, and has a detailed report on its personality from its foster family, it is generally easier to place in their forever home. That's what is so special about our rescue: our dogs live in home environments where they are able to learn house manners and basic commands. It makes the adjustment to a new home that much easier on our dogs!

5. Practice your dog training skills/Prepare yourself to own a dog...

Don't know if you're ready to own your own dog yet or need to practice your dog training skills? This is an excellent way for you to get the practice you need. By fostering a dog, you will have the opportunity to work with it and learn what it takes to be a dog owner. We will provide you with the tools to make fostering easy and enjoyable and you will learn so much more about dogs in the process.

6. It is an incredibly rewarding experience and the goodbyes are bittersweet...

Take it from us, helping a dog in need, especially one you create a bond with, is not always easy. Sometimes, saying goodbye can be difficult. However, goodbye is always sweet-- knowing that you've had a hand in helping a dog find its forever home where it will be loved for the rest of its life always feels so good.
